Former Tempe Mayor Neil Giuliano has accepted a new job as president of a national gay, lesbian, bisexual transgender media advocacy organization.

Giuliano, 48, will begin work on Sept. 1 for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. He served as Tempe's mayor from 1994 to 2004.

"Neil is going to be the face and voice of GLAAD," said Glennda Testone, communications director for the group.

"As an openly gay mayor and successful regional leader in the generally conservative state of Arizona, (Giuliano) has been one of the nation's most visable gay elected officials," the New York-based organization said in a news release.

The organization, known as GLAAD, cited Giuliano's administrative experience at Arizona State University. His job will combine administrative duties and promoting the organization.

The organization's goals include promoting "fair, accurate and inclusive" representation of gays and lesbians in the media to help eliminate homophobia and discrimination.if(ScriptsLoaded) stInit();
