The canopy grows thicker and we're walking in the cool shade. It's about 3 pm and I'm getting hungry. "How about we stop here for a bite?" I ask. You readily agree and we drop our packs after finding a nice clear area to settle in.

A yummy spread of ham sandwiches, apples and some cookies (for energy only) sates our appetites, and it's hard to think of hiking more, so we just settle down to chat. "What was the best part of the day?" I ask you.

"Well, the obvious answer would be the stream, but really, I think just sitting here and enjoying each other's company is the best. What do you think."

"I couldn't agree more. It's been a great day, and we still have a couple hours of daylight yet. Listen to the wind in the trees; and the birds are getting louder again--must be feeding time."

"Yeah, nothing like the quiet of Mother Nature. HEY!" You sit up quickly while covering your mouth, and you just point. Through the woods we can see a doe and her fawn. She picked her head up at your shout, but we lie still and quiet, and after a bit she starts eating again. We watch them for a while, then they move off deeper into the woods.

"Wow," I say, "that was really cool." I look at you and you're looking at me with a satisfied grin, and I smile back. Our eyes lock and we just stare for a moment, until you reach out and touch the back of my head and draw me to you. We kiss, and I draw you down to the blanket, you on top of me. The kisses are tender, tongues barely touching, and the world slips away for a while...

Sated, we drift off for a while to the rhythm of nature all around us.

I awaken disoriented, but seeing your head on my chest I smile and lay back, listening to the wind in the trees and the critters moving about. "Hey!" I say as I shake you gently. "We should move on or set up camp."

You lift your head slowly and roll over to look at me, your legs straddling one of mine, your chest on my stomach. "I think we should walk a bit to wake up. I'm not quite ready to bed down for the night."

"Agreed." I start to raise up as you move back a bit, and we hug and give a quick kiss before we stand up. I pull a sweatshirt out of my pack and put it on, as it's gotten a bit cooler now that the sun is waning and the shadows have grown. "We've made pretty good time today, don't you think?"

"Yupper, I just want to move a bit before we settle down. Let's go just one more hour." Off we tramp side-by-side, pointing out the beautiful wildflowers along the path. We walk quietly for the last half-hour, just being.

Finally we notice a clearing off to the side; we simply look at each other and nod, and head to it, stripping off our backpacks on the way. You look at me questioningly, and I shake my head: no tent tonight--we're sleeping under the stars. We unroll our sleeping bags, take our boots and socks off, and grab a candy bar for something to munch on.

I sit facing you and take your hands in mine. Breaking the silence I say, simply, "Thank you for today." You grin back and nod, "You too."

We look up to see the half-moon straight overhead, bright and happy. I reach over and take your shirt off, then mine, and we embrace, kissing deeply, and you lay back and I move on top of you as the night surrounds us...
