Anti-gay hate crimes on rise in NYC
NEW YORK (AP) _ A new report shows a sharp increase against the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in the city.
The Gay and Lesbian Anti-Violence Project report said anti-gay incidents throughout the city increased 43 percent and the number of victims went up 53 percent during the second half of 2003 over same period in 2002. The group said the surge was due, in part, to the June 2003 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down sodomy laws across the country. In Friday editions, the Daily News said police spokesman Paul Browne confirmed a significant increase in the number of anti-gay hate crimes. |
